Before pursuing his career with Mannheim Steamroller, Chip Davis was famous for the fictional music character that he created for his friend Bill Fries. The character was named C. W. McCall but before he earned famous over this little piece of his imagination, Davis was responsible for the production of a seemingly different album that comprised of a reworked form of classical music. This album was in collaboration with keyboard artist Jackson Berkey. It involved the use of electric bass for rhythms as well as the use of synthesizers.
A little while after Mannheim Steamroller was established, it faced a difficult time securing a deal with a record company that would handle the distribution of its future albums. Chip Davis, after lack of a positive response, came up with his own record label which went by the name American Gramaphone. It released a number of albums with the title Fresh Aire, all of which received a number of positive reviews and went on to attain Gold status. However, their biggest fame came after the group launched their first holiday album in 1984. The album was titled Mannheim Steamroller Christmas and it featured reworked Yuletide favorites. It became a huge success across the United States as it eventually went on to be credited six-times platinum. It also peaked out at the number two spot on Billboard’s Holiday Albums Chart. Their next Christmas album was A Fresh Aire Christmas which also mirrored the success of its predecessor by also being dubbed as six-time platinum in the United States. Their next few holiday albums, starting from Christmas in the Aire in 1995 up until Christmas Song in 2007, were all enshrined with the platinum or multi-platinum status. An accolade presented to any album that makes over a million sales all across the United States; one million for platinum and over two million for multi-platinum.
Mannheim Steamroller had to endure certain changes in its lineup as one of its founding members; Chip Davis, had to undergo surgery in 2008. As a result of this development, he was forced to pull out of touring or performing with the group. In order to fix this problem without it affecting the tour, he decided to hire a number of other talented musicians that were entrusted with the task of taking his place in the group for a certain amount of time until he had fully recovered and was ready to take his place back. A little while later, he also created two different lineups of the band. The reason for this was to meet with the never ending demand from their loyal fans who wished to see the band perform live. As a result, out of the two, one was scheduled to tour parts of the Midwest whereas the other was to perform in different areas on the East Coast.
